HP have released a preview of two new windows smartphones
to rival Blackberry's RIM device. Running on windows mobile
5.0 the hw6710 and hw6715 take advantage of
the new push email feature that comes with windows mobile
5.0. Instant delivery of email over GPRS is what made Blackberry
such a big success. To help you write those email messages
there's a built in mini keyboard and mini joystick controller.
The only difference between the two devices is that the hw6515
has a built in 1.3 megapixel camera whereas the hw6710
does not. As well as taking high resolution photos, the camera
can be used to take short video clips.
Where these devices excel is in their range of built in connectivity
options. Both devices come with built in WiFi 802.11g, Bluetooth,
Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, IrDA and GPS!
GPS navigation has been an add on option for PDAs and smartphones
for sometime now, but the hw6715 and hw6710 are as far as
I know the first mobile devices to come with integrated GPS.
The software is supplied by TomTom and is stored in the ROM.The
TomTom Navigator software provides a3D view of the user's
position on a map, and gives spoken directions to destinations
and there's even a choice of voices to choose from. Maps are
not included;users can download one city map from the TomTom
web site for free, but additional city maps cost £7.
The entire map set for Western Europe costs £139. The
built-in GPS uses a technique called Assisted GPS to speed
the location finding process, using satellite orbit data downloaded
from the internet. This data must be refreshed every couple
of days, updates should remain free.
